Here are a few examples of road maps that you can buy for your Road Trip. Even if you're going to have internet access every night, Google Maps is not enough to plan your daily route. And if you get lost, Google Maps is not of any help. You definitely need a good road atlas. Usually the road atlases that cover all California provide only a level of detail up to the freeways and the main roads. You will probably need a more detailed map when visiting a city, especially big cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles or San Diego. A very good solution is the Thomas Guide (the third one here on the left) that provides maps with three levels of detail, and a smart way to move from one to the other. I found it very very useful.
